Who doesn’t love an artsy French film?

‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ (or ‘Portrait de la jeune fille en feu’) is a film I have recently watched and fallen in love with. It is set in 18th century France and follows the story of a painter, Marianne, who is commissioned to paint the countess’ daughter, Héloïse, in order to send her portrait to a potential suitor. However, Marianne must do this in secret as Héloïse refuses to be married off.

"Everything about this film is beautiful – you could pause it at any point and the scene would look like a renaissance painting within itself."

Everything about this film is beautiful – you could pause it at any point and the scene would look like a renaissance painting within itself. It is an emotional, character-driven story with an all-female cast that will leave you in awe. It is the perfect film to whisk you away to another world during lockdown and live vicariously through the characters. To top it all off, it has English subtitles!
