111 reasons to love Deutschland

Ann Kinzer recommends an easily readable introduction to Germany and the Germans

· Ann Kinzer,Julian Gringer,German culture

A book that will make you love 'ze Germans' - if you don't already.

Germans are not exactly known for their national pride. Quite the contrary to be honest! In fact, it was only when Germany hosted the world cup in 2006 that people felt confident to show their national flag again. Juliane Gringer, author of this ‘längst überfällige Liebeserklärung’ (this long overdue declaration of love) equally starts this book by asking whether it is actually okay to love Germany – she finds it is (reason 1). In the chapters that follow, she illustrates why and thereby examines the core of the German culture - if there really is such a thing (cf. reason 111).

Why I recommend this:

This is a brilliant book for anyone wanting to learn more about German culture and the many different facettes of it. It is written in German, but the chapters are very(!) short and the language is accessible. This makes it possible to ‘work through’ at B1-B2 level (this is actually class room proven!). Anyone with a higher level will find reading it easier of course, but as we all know: practice makes perfect.
